$5,000 for general support of this organization, whose activities include documenting discrimination and violence against disabled women and children, publicizing such abuses, and pressing for concrete changes at the local and national levels to afford disabled persons greater rights.


Association of Environmental Lawyers of Liberia (AELL)/Green Advocates
$25,000 for general support of this organization, whose activities include building the capacity of rural communities to monitor, document and report environmental rights violations, raising awareness of public sector corruption related to natural resource extraction, and pursuing litigation to enforce environmental and human rights laws.

Association of Environmental Lawyers of Liberia (AELL)/Green Advocates
$26,000 for its project to build a national movement to defend and promote the right to a healthy environment by providing funding and technical support to five community-based organizations in southern Liberia to expand outreach to poor, rural communities, as well as monitor/document/report on human rights violations that can support legal cases and national campaigns.


Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia (AFELL)
$20,000 for general support of this organization, whose activities include legal and media campaigns, training, and civic education on the rights of women, children and indigent persons, including the pursuit of legal cases on behalf of women and children survivors of sexual violence and campaigns to promote the enforcement of women’s inheritance rights.

$10,000 for general support of this organization, whose activities include using popular theater to raise awareness of human rights issues and violations at the community level.


Fore-runners of Children’s Universal Rights for Survival (FOCUS)
$10,000 for its project to conduct human rights education and organizing in southeast Liberia to promote access to justice and to challenge traditional practices which violate human rights.


Foundation for Human Rights and Democracy (FOHRD)
$20,000 for its project to highlight corruption and its impact on human rights, raise awareness among policymakers and the public about these issues, and propose reforms in the management of national resources, peace building and reconstruction efforts.


Liberia Democracy Watch (LDW)
$25,000 for Liberia Democracy Watch’s project with the Foundation for International Dignity (FIND) to operate a national resource center for human rights organizations.


Movement for Peace and Reconciliation in Liberia (MOPAR)
$5,000 for its project to promote women’s rights by training female community leaders in eastern Liberia on human rights monitoring and documentation and by strengthening community-based women’s organizations to begin to identify specific human rights problems affecting women and develop strategies to address them.

$10,000 for general support of this organization, which provides human rights education and counseling for ex-combatants and promotes effective disarmament and reintegration processes.


Sustainable Development Institute (SDI)
$5,000 for general support of this organization in southeast Liberia whose activities include providing local communities with the information and tools they need to challenge environmental and human rights violations at the local level.


Zorzor District Women Care (ZODWOCA)
$5,000 for general support of this organization in northern Liberia whose activities include educating women about the new inheritance law which guarantees women’s property rights, so that they may challenge traditional practices that discriminate against women

Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia (AFELL)

$5,000 for general support of this organization, whose activities include legal and media campaigns, training, and civic education on the rights of women, children and indigent persons.


Center for the Protection of Human Rights (CPHR)

$10,000 for the Center’s project to defend the rights of indigent, internally displaced persons being held in detention without charge or trial in three counties of Liberia (Montserrado, Margibi and Grand Bassa).

$10,000 for this organization’s human rights training program for broadcast journalists at the community level in rural areas.  LIJ networks with journalists in the Mano River region and seeks to foster public debate and discussion on human rights issues.


National Human Rights Centre of Liberia (NHRCL)

$20,000 for NHRCL’s project to provide human rights training to rural community-based organizations and national human rights organizations in Liberia. NHRCL, a consortium of nine groups committed to the protection and promotion of the fundamental rights and civil liberties of Liberians, seeks to foster a stable network for monitoring human rights throughout the country.


Post-Conflict Reintegration for Development and Empowerment (PRIDE)

$10,000 for this organization’s project to set up an office in Liberia, and to provide training, rights education and counseling for ex-combatants and technical assistance to NGOs on effective disarmament and reintegration of ex-combatants.


2003


Association of Environmental Lawyers of Liberia/Green Advocates (AELL)

$20,000 to support Green Advocates’ project to develop the capacity of three rural communities to monitor, document and publicize corporate and government practices that cause human rights abuse and environmental degradation and to represent affected communities in legal actions to ensure enforcement of Liberia’s laws protecting rights and the environment. 

Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia (AFELL)

$15,000 in general support of AFELL, which runs a legal clinic for victims of sexual and other gender-based violence, works with security personnel and camp managers to protect women refugees from violence, and is pressing for better legal protection of women’s rights.


Center for the Protection of Human Rights

$10,000 to support the Center’s legal aid program, which challenges the prolonged and wrongful detention of citizens. The Center provides legal assistance to indigent and internally displaced persons being held in detention without charge or trial in three counties of Liberia (Montserrado, Margibi and Grand Bassa).


Liberia Institute of Journalism (LIJ)

$10,000 to support LIJ’s project to promote freedom of expression by training broadcast journalists at the community level in northeastern and southeastern Liberia, creating regional networks among journalists in West Africa, and encouraging public debate and discussion on human rights issues.


National Human Rights Centre of Liberia (NHRCL)                          

$15,000 to support NHRCL’s project to provide training on human rights documentation and reporting to rural, community-based (in Bomi, Bong and Nimba counties) and national human rights organizations in Liberia. NHRCL is a consortium of nine groups that assists members and others to develop their capacities for human rights fact-finding, advocacy, and victim support.


Press Union of Liberia (PUL)

$10,000 to support PUL’s project to establish and operate the country’s alternate non-profit, independent printing press.
