West Africa Grants

The countries of the Mano River region, which include Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, share many common human rights challenges.  While many communities displaced by the conflict have returned home, people and arms continue to pass through porous borders. The fragile peace currently enjoyed in the region is threatened by the inability of the Liberian government to extend its judicial system beyond Monrovia, and the failure of the Sierra Leonean government to address corruption and allocate sufficient resources to meet the basic needs of its people.  In the Mano River region, the Fund supports human rights organizations that are working to hold governments accountable for corruption, fight violence against women, and promote access to justice for the rural poor.
